Ward LockwoodAmerican painter, 1894–1963

Born in Kansas, Lockwood developed his modern style of watercolor painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in Paris before settling in Taos in 1926. In New Mexico he associated with fellow modernists John Marin and Andrew Dasburg. He worked in a variety of modern styles, absorbing influences of Cubism, Surrealism, and Expressionism. Lockwood taught at Broadmoor Academy in Colorado Springs and the University of Texas. He maintained a home in Taos and remained closely associated with the city and its art scene.
