Simmie Knox

American artist, born 1935
BiographyBorn in Aliceville, Alabama, Knox is best known for his official White House portraits of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. The completion of these portraits made Knox the first Black American artist to receive a presidential commission. Knox earned a master’s degree from the Tyler School of Art in Pennsylvania before embarking on his successful career in arts education and the visual arts.
