John Ward McClellan

American artist, 1908–1984, born in London

BiographyMcClellan is best known as a printmaker. Born in London to American parents, McClellan first studied at Yale to be a physician before transferring to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He also attended the Académie Julien in Paris and travelled through Europe, developing a special affinity for Spain and the poetry of Federico García Lorca. In the 1930s he settled in Woodstock, New York and began to develop a reputation as an artist. He served in World War II and his experience entering a concentration camp had a profound impact on him. He participated in the broad-based interest in print making and collecting in the United States in the 1930s through the 1950s.
