Walter Stuempfig

American painter and art instructor, 1914–1970

BiographyBorn in Germantown, Stuempfig spent most of his career in Philadelphia, teaching composition and drawing form from 1948 through the sixties at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Stuempfig had attended University of Pennsylvania, studying architecture briefly, before transferring to the Academy, where he studied with Henry McCarter, Daniel Garber and Francis Speight in the 1930s. Working in a romantic realist style, Stuempfig found success quickly as a painter, exhibiting at the Whitney Museum and the Corcoran Gallery as a young man and winning prestigious painting prizes. He had his first solo shows in Philadelphia and New York City in 1942–43.
