BiographyJohn F. Francis was born in Philadelphia and was largely self-taught. In the 1840s, he began to exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and to paint still-life compositions. By 1854, he was working exclusively in this genre and specializing in pictures of fruits and desserts.
