Earl Horter

American artist and collector, 1881–1940
BiographyArtist Earl Horter was at the heart of the dynamic circle of modern artists and architects active in Philadelphia in the 1920s and '30s, and he amassed an impressive collection of modern art, including works by Europeans like Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp and Americans like Charles Sheeler and Arthur B. Carles. Born in Germantown, Horter worked as an illustrator in New York before returning to Philadelphia as art director for the N. W. Ayer advertising firm from 1917 to 1923. He exhibited both paintings and prints in galleries and museums and taught at Philadelphia-area art schools.
