SchoolAbstract expressionism, Neo-Dada, Modern art, Pop art
BiographyPainter, sculptor, and printmaker, Jasper Johns is one of the leading figures of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. Johns briefly attended art school in New York but is largely considered to be self-taught with the majority of his training informed by his study of philosophers and other artists including Paul Cezanne, Marcel Duchamp, and Pablo Picasso. The artist maintained a close relationship with painter Robert Rauschenberg and collaborated with other contemporaries, working on sets and costumes for the modern dance choreographer, Merce Cunningham. Like many of his fellow Pop artists, Johns explored the everyday world around him for subject matter and incorporated targets, flags, and maps into his work.
