Thomas George

American painter, draftsman, printmaker, 1918–2014
BiographyThe son of famous cartoonist Rube Goldberg, Thomas George was born in New York City in 1918 and received a degree in art history from Dartmouth College in 1940. He studied at the Art Students League and the Woodstock School of Art and began professional work as an industrial designer in New York City in 1941. Following his participation in the Navy during World War II, he continued his studies in Paris and Florence and has spent time living and working abroad throughout his career. The natural world has long fascinated the artist, who has produced drawings, paintings, and prints of the landscape in New England and New Mexico, and abroad in Wales, France, Norway, and China.

George has had numerous solo retrospective exhibitions, including a 2005 show at the Princeton University Art Museum, and exhibited for twenty years at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York. The Delaware Art Museum hosted solo shows of George's work in 1971 (Norway series) and 1975 (images from China). His work is included in private, corporate, and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Princeton University Art Museum.
