Raymond Pettibon

Raymond Pettibon was born in Tucson, Arizona in 1957 and received an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1977. In 1998, his first American museum solo exhibition opened at The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago and continued to the Drawing Center in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Pettibon was heavily involved with the west coast punk music scene in the 1970s and 1980s, designing album covers and logos for bands such as Black Flag and Sonic Youth. The artist focuses on works on paper, drawings primarily, and he credits his quick gestural style to the influence of William Blake, Goya, and political cartoons. Pettibon has been included in four Whitney Museum of American Art biennial exhibitions, the Liverpool Biennial, SITE Santa Fe, and documenta XI in 2002. The artist's works are included in the public collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Gallery in London, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among many others. In 2017, the New Museum will present Pettibon's first museum retrospective in New York, surveying his work from the 1960s through the present.
