John Meigs

American painter and designer, 1916–2003
BiographyMeigs graduated from the University of Redlands in California before working as a newspaper reporter in Los Angeles and then for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in Hawaii. Interested in artmaking since childhood, he left his job in Honolulu to study fine arts in Paris for a year. He was a painter, printmaker, and photographer who completed commercial art assignments and designed houses and buildings. Painter Peter Hurd inspired Meigs to become an artist and the two were lifelong friends.

Meigs is credited with being one of the first designers of aloha shirts. He had over fifty one-man exhibitions, and in 1997 received the New Mexico Excellence in the Arts award.
