Max Bill

Swiss architect, painter, and sculptor, 1908–1994
BiographyMax Bill was known for founding the Concrete Art movement, bringing elements of Russian Constructivism and mathematics into his work as a painter, architect, and designer. Born in Winterthur, Switzerland, Bill studied under Klee and Kandinsky at the Bauhaus. He was a cofounder of the Ulm School of Design in Ulm, Germany, and taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zurich and the Hochschule fur bildende Kunste Hamburg. He is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, among other public institutions, and was the subject of retrospectives at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
