Josef Albers

German and American artist, theorist, and teacher, 1888–1976
BiographyJosef Albers was born in Bottrop, Germany in 1888. He studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar and began to teach the basic design course there in 1923. Albers emigrated to the United States following the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933 and became head of the art department at Black Mountain College where he taught until 1949. From 1950 to 1958, Albers served as the head of the design department at Yale University. The artist lived and worked in New Haven, Connecticut until his death in 1976.
