Jacob LawrenceAmerican painter, 1917–2000

Jacob Lawrence took art classes through the Works Progress Administration in the mid-1930s in addition to studying at the Harlem Art Workshop and the American Artists' School in New York City. His style is characterized by flat, simplified forms and space and schematic designs. Lawrence met and was influenced by Josef Albers while teaching at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, and the artist's commitment to form and design was solidified as a result. Lawrence's subject matter focused on scenes of everyday life in Harlem as well as historical events and characters.
