BiographyIrish by birth, Traquair spent her working life in Edinburgh where she worked in a broad range of media including embroidery, illustration, book design, jewelry and mural painting. As such she cannot be discussed purely within the confines of the Arts and Crafts. John Ruskin, with whom she corresponded, was particularly influential in her early career. She was also particularly impacted by the work of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones. (Likenesses of the two often show up within crowd scenes in her work). Much of her subject matter is religious in nature, both by necessity of location – for example, murals for St. Mary’s Episcopal Academy and the Catholic Apostolic Church, both in Edinburgh. She exhibited broadly – at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, beginning in 1906, as well as at various world expositions, including the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904.Person TypeIndividual
