Ruth DuckworthGerman born sculptor and muralist, 1919–2009

Ruth Duckworth is known for her modernist sculpture and ceramics. Born in Germany, she left the country to study art at the Liverpool School of Art, the Hammersmith School of Art, and the Central School of Arts and Crafts in England. While she originally wanted to study painting and sculpture, she began to focus on ceramics while at the Central School. In 1964 Duckworth moved to the United States to teach at the University of Chicago, where she would live for the rest of her life and create her most well-known works, such as her stoneware mural "Clouds Over Lake Michigan." The Museum of Arts and Design held a retrospective exhibition of her work in 2005, which traveled to several museums around the country.
