BiographyPart of an artistic family, William was the son of John Sartain, a central figure in the Philadelphia art scene, and brother of Emily Sartain who became director of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. Sartain attended Central High School with Thomas Eakins and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Sartain traveled to Paris in 1868 (with Eakins) and in the early 1870s. Sartain returned to the United States and settled in New York City. He became a successful painter.
