Thomas Pollock AnshutzAmerican painter, 1851–1912

Born in Newport, Kentucky, Anshutz studied at the National Academy of Design. In 1875 he moved to Philadelphia and attended classes with Thomas Eakins. By 1878 he would be working as an assistant to Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In the early 1890s he and his wife lived in Paris and he studied at the Académie Julian. In 1893 he returned to Philadelphia and resumed teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he remained until 1911 when he retired due to ill health.
