Paolo Soleri

American architect born in Italy, 1919–2013
BiographyPaolo Soleri was born in Turin, Italy in 1919 and obtained his Ph. D in architecture from the Torino Polytechnico in 1946. In 1947, he travelled to the United States to serve a fellowship with Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1956, Soleri settled in Scottsdale, Arizona and established the Cosanti Foundation. The Foundation's activities focus on education and Arcosanti, a prototype town based on Soleri's theory of architecture fused with ecology known as Arcology. Soleri published widely on architecture, including his well-known text, Arcology: The City in the Image of Man. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad.
