American etcher, painter, and teacher, 1864–1919
BiographyBorn in Breddin, Germany, Mielatz came to the United States as a boy and studied at the Chicago School of Design. His earliest prints depicted the pastoral landscape of New England, but he is best known for his images of city streets. A master technician, he was one of the pioneers of multiplate color etchings in the United States. He was a member of the New York Etching Club, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, and the National Academy of Design. He also taught etching at the National Academy.
