BiographyDirk Baksteen (born Rotterdam March 29, 1886 - died Antwerp, September 24 1971) was a Belgian painter and etcher. He studied at the Rotterdam Art Academy. In 1912 he settled in Mol, Belgium and became part of a group of plein air painters including Jacob Smits, Paul Mathieu and Gaston de Biemme. He met the American etcher William Sherwood from whom he learned etching techniques and through whom he became a member of the Chicago Etching Society (1924).
