William Chadwick

American painter, 1879–1962
BiographyBorn in Yorkshire, England, Chadwick moved to the United States as a boy. Around the turn of the century, he studied at the Art Students League in New York, before traveling to Europe. Eventually Chadwick adopted the impressionist style of his teachers Joseph DeCamp and John Twachtman. He spent summers painting in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Chadwick married Pauline Bancroft of Wilmington, Delaware, and in 1915, they purchased a home in Old Lyme, where they lived for the next forty years. He also painted at Monhegan Island, Maine, Vermont, and Bermuda.
