Twachtman was an American painter best known for his impressionist landscapes. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Twachtman first studied with Frank Duveneck. He followed in his teacher's footsteps, studying in Munich at the Academy of Fine Arts, and then traveling to Venice with Duveneck and William Merritt Chase. On this trip he absorbed the loose, bravura brushwork associated with Munich and took up etching. From 1883 through 1885, he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris and he began to work with a lighter, less dramatic, grey-green palette. Twachtman returned to the United States in 1886 and settled in Connecticut where he bought a farm. He spent considerable time at the artists' colony of Cos Cob and became part of the American impressionist group, The Ten.
