Frederick Judd Waugh

Waugh is best known as a marine painter and a camouflage designer for the U.S. Navy during World War I. The son of Philadelphia portrait painter Samuel Waugh and miniature painter Mary Eliza Young, Frederick studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins and in Paris at the Académie Julian. He married a fellow Academy student in 1892 and they moved to England for the next 15 years, where Waugh painted seascapes and illustrated for London newspapers and magazines. When they returned, they moved around the East Coast, living in New York City; Montclair, New Jersey; and Kent, Connecticut. Later, Waugh lived in Monhegan, Maine, and Provincetown, Massachusetts.
