Elizabeth Talford Scott

1916–2011
BiographyBorn 1916 to a family of sharecroppers, Elizabeth Talford Scott became known as a quilter and folk artist. She incorporated fabrics from around the work into her quilts, often including found objects such as stones, buttons, and shells, drawing upon African and African American visual traditions. A retrospective exhibition of her works, "Eyewinkers, Tumbleturds and Candlebugs: The Art of Elizabeth Talford Scott," was held at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Smithsonian in 1998. She is the mother of multimedia artist Joyce Scott.
