Faith Ringgold

American painter and sculptor, 1930–2024
BiographyFaith Ringgold is best known for her painted story quilts and award-winning children’s books that explore the African American female perspective. Ringgold taught at the University of California, San Diego from 1987 until 2002 and is the recipient of numerous honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees. Her works are included in the collections of major museums throughout the United States and abroad including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, among many others. Ringgold has received numerous public art commissions, which can be found in the 125th Street Subway Station in New York and at the Hostos Community College. Ringgold has created numerous books and her first, the 1991 publication, Tar Beach, is based on her story quilt of the same name. The children's book received a Caldecott Honor and the Coretta Scott King Book Award for that year.
