William Freeland

American sculptor, 1929–2009
BiographyFollowing studies at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, William Freeland attended Hans Hofmann’s summer school in Provincetown in 1957. Freeland taught at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia from 1969 to 1990 and beginning in 1992, split his time living and working in Pennsylvania and Ireland. Freeland was inspired by utilitarian objects found both in Chester County and Ireland. The two- and three-dimensional forms that he created reference these abstract objects, the farming tools, windmills, boats, and cottages he found both at home and abroad.
