Label TextShields spent almost 20 years near the end of his life working on the interior decoration for the Chapel of the Ascension in Bayswater, London. He worked jointly with the architect, Herbert Horne, and the patron, the wealthy widow of a Quaker banker, Mrs. Russell Gurney. Sadly, the building was destroyed by a bomb during the Blitz in 1940. All that remains today of this substantial design scheme are a few black and white photographs and some of Shields’ preliminary drawings such as this one.
