Label TextThis drawing is for Shields’ decoration of the Chapel of the Ascension in Bayswater, London (begun 1882; completed 1910). The Chapel, was meant for quiet contemplation with a decorative scheme that was non-denominational, but firmly Christian in iconography. Shields spent the last 27 years of his life at work on the chapel, which was bombed during the Blitz of World War II and demolished in 1969. Drawings and a few very rare photographs are all we have left today of this extensive project.
