Label TextThis drawing is one of numerous preparatory sketches made by the Pre-Raphaelite artist, Frederic Shields. In 1887, Shields was commissioned to create a non-denominational chapel, based on early Italian models, in the Bayswater section of London. His scheme for the interior decoration took over twenty years to complete. The subject depicted is the scapegoat. The design was part of the decorative scheme on the woodwork of the north end of the Chapel of the Ascension.
