Label TextThis drawing is one of numerous preparatory sketches made by the Pre-Raphaelite artist, Frederic Shields. In 1887, Shields was commissioned to create a non-denominational chapel, based on early Italian models, in the Bayswater section of London. His scheme for the interior decoration took over twenty years to complete. The subject depicted relates to Psalm 22, verse 16, "the dogs have encompassed me..." and relates to Christ's Passion. It was part of the decorative scheme of the chapel, and was intended to fill one of the many spandrels of the interior.
