Label TextAfter the death of Pre-Raphaelite painter, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Shields was approached by his sister, Christina, to design a grave stone and “two lights in stained glass, to be placed in the little window which overlooks the grave” of the church in Birchington. This watercolor is the subject of one of those two windows. Shields, a passionately pious man, was deeply moved by Rossetti’s death and found solace in the creation of this memorial to his friend.
