Label TextIn 1866 Shields suffered a nervous breakdown. He traveled to Sandgate in Kent to stay with friends. A military camp nearby inspired a number of compositions. This sketch relates to one of these works titled "After the Storming," depicting a wounded (and dying) drummer boy. According to the artist's biographer the subject was inspired when during a review, "a drummer boy fainted and a comrade brought water to him in his bugle."Frederic James Shields
