Label TextDaniel Beard was known especially for his illustration of some of Mark Twain's books. An avid outdoorsman, he also taught animal drawing from 1893 to 1900; this image-from a moralizing children's story-shows his facility in depicting barnyard antics. He captures the disarray of upended chicks and irate hen as they face a talking monkey who constantly causes chaos with his unpredictable behavior.

Bearsd had another career as a youth leader. He founded the Sons of Daniel Boone, which later merged with the Boy Scouts of America, and helped his sister organize the Camp Fire Girls.
