Label TextDan Beard was an author, illustrator (most famously for Mark Twain), youth leader, and a founder of the Scouts of America. Much of his work was in a naturalistic style, but his illustrations for humorous children's stories were graceful and refined, suited to their imaginary world. Beard may have been making an ironic political comment here, depicting the King's councilors "all reading their reports to one another, and none listening."
