Label TextWinner of the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1937, Kansas native C. D. Batchelor contributed political cartoons to various New York City newspapers. This image of a morose personification of America includes ghostly soldiers in the background. The cartoon conforms to one critic's description of Batchelor's work: (his) strong cartons were drawn with...a moralizing viewpoint...with...captions written on scrolls; they have the appearance of documents."
