Label TextFrom 1966–1970, Nancy Spero produced War Series: Bombs and Helicopters, a pictorial response to the deep, personal anger she felt for the Vietnam War. Her challenging imagery combines expletives with phallic representations of weapons of mass destruction as a means to depict the atrocities of war. In Maypole War, the artist revisits this earlier series as a reaction to the Middle East conflicts in the mid-2000s.
