Label TextA contributor to the first issue of the feminist art and politics journal published by the Heresies Collective, May Stevens has explored war, class, and social injustice in her figurative work. Her subject matter has included civil rights activists in the early 1960s, grotesque personifications of the Vietnam War, and powerful historical female figures, such as the Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi. The Band Played On is similar to a series of etchings Stevens complete in the late 1990s.
