Label TextEmma Amos is a self-defined “colorist,” referencing the political implications of color in her paintings and prints. Identity is based on an earlier self-portrait in which the artist has created a two-tone complexion. Though a past member of the short-lived but important African American artist collective, Spiral, Amos has consistently challenged limitations of subject matter based on her race and gender.
