Label TextMiriam Schapiro is considered an important leader of both the feminist art movement and the Pattern and Decoration Movement of the 1970s. In addition to establishing the feminist program at Cal Arts in Valencia, California with artist Judy Chicago, she was a founding member of the Heresies Collective in New York City that published a feminist journal on art and politics from the late 1970s through the early 1990s. Court Jester is typical of her acrylic and fabric constructions, which the artist called “femmage,” a witty variation of the term “collage.”
