BiographyA central figure in the American Pop Art movement, Robert Indiana referred to himself as a sign painter and incorporated the formal and signifying elements of commercial culture into his paintings and sculptures. He paired brightly-colored, hard-edge forms with signs and symbols such as numbers, letters, and words to address social concerns in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1978, he left New York and settled on a remote island off the coast of Maine.Person TypeIndividual
