Wayne Thiebaud

American painter, born 1920
BiographyWayne Thiebaud is a west coast-based artist best known for his painterly depictions of everyday objects such as pies, cakes, and other symbols of consumerism. Thiebaud received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from California State University at Sacramento following work as a commercial artist. The artist has insisted that his nostalgic images of popular culture are less critical in their assessment compared to the work of his contemporary Pop Art practitioners of the 1960s. The artist's numerous achievements have been acknowledged by the American Academy of Design in New York, among others, and in 1994 he received a National Medal of Arts from the United States Congress. Thiebaud's first solo exhibition was held at the Crocker Art Gallery, and his work is represented in major private and public collections in the United States and abroad.
