Fritz Scholder

Fritz Scholder studied under Oscar Howe and Wayne Thiebaud, and in 1961, participated in the Southwest Indian Art Project. Following graduate studies at The University of Arizona, Tucson, Scholder became an instructor at the Institute of American Indians Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Scholder has worked in a variety of media, first in series of paintings and later in lithography—with the Tamarind Institute—and etching—with El Dorado Press and Leonard Baskin. Throughout his career, the artist focused on the depiction of the American Indian—Scholder is one-quarter Luiseno—and pervasive cultural stereotypes.
