David TrueAmerican painter, born 1942

David True was born in Marietta, Ohio in 1942 and obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees in fine art from Ohio University. True began exhibiting in Chicago and New York in the mid-1970s, and in 1977 he was included in the Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The next year, Richard Marshall included the artist in the seminal exhibition, New Image Painting, which surveyed the new trend of artists portraying everyday symbols to be translated by the viewer. True has continued to exhibition throughout the United States and abroad with surveys of his work hosted by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 1984 and a show of his etchings at Crown Point Galleries in 1987. In addition to receiving two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, True's work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
