Alexander L. Dick

Scottish engraver, ca.1805–1865, active in New York City
BiographyA.L. Dick (c.1806-1865). Born in Scotland, Dick was a pupil of Robert Scott, a reputable engraver of Edinburgh; he came to the United States in 1833 and in time he established an extensive engraving business in New York City. While Dick doubtless did some engraving himself, he was the employer of many engravers; and as all plates issuing from his place bore his name, it is practically impossible to identify his individual work.
