Mead Schaeffer

Meed Schaeffer was born in Freedom Plains, New York. After training at Pratt Institute, Schaeffer studied illustration with Howard Pyle students Harvey Dunn and Dean Cornwell, leading the artist to describe himself as a grandchild of Pyle. He began his career illustrating classic novels published by Dodd Mead including Moby-Dick, Typee, Omoo, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Les Miserables. Schaeffer additionally illustrated for magazines such as Good Housekeeping, McCall's, the Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal, and Cosmopolitan. He additionally worked as a war correspondant for the Saturday Evening Post during World War II and illustrated American military personnel.
