Charles Burwell

American painter, born 1955
BiographyCharles Burwell creates dynamic and elegant abstract paintings, often times on a large scale that are formally rigorous, visually stimulating, and spatially complex. He engages in a labor intensive process using many layers of paint to create each work. The linear mark is a constant element in each of his paintings which he entwines with organic shapes and other geometric forms. His paintings begin with layers of drips that have specific color structure and he builds from there, one stratum at time, resulting in complicated and exciting work. In recent years he has started to use the computer as another tool in his practice to collect, store, and manipulate images, which he then uses in his paintings. Burwell received a B.F.A. from Tyler School of Art and an M.F.A. from Yale University.
