Werner Drewes

American painter, printmaker, and draftsman, 1899–1985
BiographyBorn in Canig, Germany, Werner Drewes studied art in Stuttgart and at the Bauhaus in Weimar. He first visited the United States in 1924–25, and he returned in 1930, becoming a citizen in 1936. Drewes taught at the Brooklyn Museum and Columbia University and was a founder of the American Abstract Artists group. In 1944 he studied printmaking at Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17. In 1946 Drewes left New York to join the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, where he remained for nearly two decades.
