Marg Johansen

American printmaker and textile weaver, 1923–2004
BiographyMargaret Johansen was a printmaker and textile artist of Lenape descent. She attended Reed College in Oregon, where she studied sociology, and also studied at La Escuela de Antropologia de Mexico and the University of New Hampshire. Based in Pittsburgh and Oregon throughout her life, she taught at Carnegie Mellon and Western Oregon University, among other institutions, and was one of the first Americans to be invited to exhibit in the Biennale Exhibit of Tapestry in Switzerland in 1965. Johansen was named artist of the year in Pittsburgh in 1970 and is represented in the collection of the Portland Art Museum in Oregon. An annual scholarship in Johansen's name is awarded to a promising artist graduating from an Oregon high school.
