BiographyCarolee Schneemann was known primarily for her performance work that developed in the early 1960s from her experiences with Happenings—improvisational events in public spaces. Gender and the sexuality of the female body have long informed her practice, though Schneemann’s recent prints and photographs present appropriated images of disasters and international conflict with expressionist mark-making.
