Alexander Brook

American painter, 1898–1980

BiographyBrook was a representational painter and the husband of the artist and illustrator Peggy Bacon. Born in Brooklyn, Brook entered the Art Students League in 1915. He studied there for four years, and his instructors included Kenneth Hayes Miller, Frank V. DuMond, and George Bridgman. He formed close friendships with his fellow art students, including his future wife, Peggy Bacon, whom he married in 1920. Bacon and Brook divided their time between New York City, where they both exhibited regularly, and a summer home in Woodstock. In the 1920s and early '30s, Brook also wrote for The Arts, assisted Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney with the Whitney Studio Club, and taught at the Art Students League. In 1938 Brook traveled to Savannah, Georgia, for the first time. Thereafter, he traveled there regularly, settling there in 1944 with his third wife Gina Knee; the city became a favorite subject.
